Winter Weather Increases Risk of Dangerous Accidents

As another Nor-easter blows through the state, motorists need to prepare for poor road conditions. Ice, wind, and sleet are expected to blanket the city. Near-freezing temperatures overnight ensure slick roadways and the potential for deadly accidents.

Winter Weather Bombards New York State

New Yorkers are preparing for another round of snow storms and devastating winds. In addition to potential power outages, city dwellers are facing hazardous road conditions. Several car accidents were reported after a layer of snow covered Staten Island earlier this month.

As reported by silive.com, multiple collisions occurred as a result of the slick roads including a multi-car crash on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Parkway. Winter-related accidents can be catastrophic, resulting in serious injury or death. Individuals who have been hurt in traffic collisions are strongly encouraged to contact a New York City car accident lawyer.

Snow and Ice Accidents

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), approximately 24% of all weather-related traffic accidents occur on “snowy, slushy, or icy pavement.” Research indicates that over 1,300 people die in motor vehicle accidents in these conditions and another nearly 117,000 individuals are injured nationwide each year.

In addition to the dangers related to icy roadways, 15% of weather-related accidents happen during snowfall or sleet. An estimated 900 people die and around 76,000 people are injured during these conditions each year.

New York Ranked as One of Deadliest States During Winter

A ranking by ValuePenguin for the Deadliest States for Winter Driving placed New York 3rd in the nation. Their findings indicate that there were 183 winter-weather driving fatalities over the course of four years. Only Michigan and Pennsylvania had more at 282 and 197, respectively.

The New York City borough of Queens had the largest number of fatal winter-weather traffic accidents at seven while the most dangerous road was SR-104. It is believed that the state’s harsh conditions during the winter months and high traffic volume are likely some of the reasons for the death toll.
