Study Launched to ‘Reimagine’ the Infamous Highway

according to local news reports, a new study is being conducted by New York City and the state to “reimagine” the Cross-Bronx Expressway. The highway has been linked to several negative impacts on the community. The study will evaluate a number of ways to fix the issues surrounding the Expressway including “capping” it.

At Ajlouny Injury Law, we have helped thousands of New Yorkers who were injured in car accidents. Our lawyers know the dangers on the Cross-Bronx Expressway and are dedicated to ensuring that injury victims receive the compensation they deserve after a crash. Mayor Eric Adams Announces New Study

In December 2022, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that a new study would be launched to ‘reimagine’ the Cross-Bronx Expressway. The $2 million study was funded by a grant from the federal Department of Transportation. The goal of the study is to understand and “address the negative effects of the highway on nearby residents.”

Since its completion over 50 years ago, the Cross-Bronx Expressway has been a point of contention for surrounding communities. As discussed by the Mayor, its construction displaced thousands of residents. Since then, it has aided in a substantial increase in pollution in the area and is linked to higher rates of asthma. The Gothamist notes that nearby residents account for “some of the highest rates in the country.”

What Will the Study Do?

Using information gathered at community stakeholder meetings over the next two years, officials hope to develop a comprehensive plan to deal with the problems the highway has created. One of the primary considerations is whether it is feasible to “cap” parts of the highway.  Capping a road involves putting a deck on top of it to limit the pollution from escaping.

The deck on top of the Expressway could be used for many different things including a green space, pedestrian walkway, or bike path. In addition to examining the cost and convenience of capping, the study will also look to find ways to reduce pollution.

The study is being conducted by New York City’s Department of Transportation, Department of City Planning, and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, along with the state’s Department of Transportation.

Dangers on the Cross-Bronx Expressway

A section of the Cross-Bronx Expressway was named one of the most dangerous in the nation. In a single year, there were 142 car accidents on the Expressway where it meets Sedgewick Avenue.

If you are involved in a collision, it is in your best interest to speak to an experienced Bronx car accident lawyer. A lawyer can help you understand your rights and fight to ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve.
