Car Accident Injuries and Deaths in NYC

In 2014, the citywide initiative known as Vision Zero to combat the devastating number of people killed each year due to traffic accidents in NYC. The goal was to reduce the number of deaths to zero by 2024. Despite this goal, deaths continued to plague city streets.

According to Vision City View, citywide accident totals in 2022:

  • There were 257 traffic-related fatalities;
  • 50,713 accident-related injuries;
  • 120 pedestrian fatalities and over 8,500 injuries; and
  • Over 4,600 cyclists were injured and 17 were killed.

While the statistics (with the exception of cyclist injuries and deaths) represent a slight decline from the previous year, they are still extremely high. 2021 saw a Vision Zero record high number of injuries and deaths.

When Will New York City Streets Be Safer?

As reported by Common Edge, the goal to reach zero accident-related deaths under Vision Zero was recently pushed back to 2030. Unfortunately, it is unclear what methods or plans of action would make the City’s streets safer sooner.

In an effort to speed along the process, other groups such as OpenPlans have joined the fight. OpenPlans is a statewide advocacy organization working to pass the SAFE Streets Act. Some of the goals include reducing speed limits, reauthorizing the speed camera program, and expanding rights to crash victims.

What to Do If You Are Injured in a Car Accident

The reality is that thousands of New Yorkers will be injured in car accidents over the next year. If you or a loved one is hurt or killed in a traffic accident, you need to speak to a New York City car accident lawyer as soon as possible. An attorney can help you understand your rights including your right to compensation.

While New York is a no-fault insurance state, you should still speak with an attorney to determine your legal options and file a claim. If you were seriously injured you might be entitled to additional compensation for your accident-related losses. It is imperative that you act quickly since you only have a limited amount of time to file a cause of action based on personal injury or wrongful death.
