You can be charged with a criminal offense for failing to stop after an accident.
In addition to stopping after an accident, you need to exchange information with the other people involved in the crash. Generally, you must provide your name, address, insurance information, and vehicle registration number. Failure to exchange information could be seen as leaving the scene of an accident, even if you initially stopped.
Obtaining Compensation If Someone Leaves the Scene of an Accident
New York follows no-fault insurance laws, meaning that individuals who are injured in an accident generally pursue a claim for compensation through their own insurance company regardless of fault.
