According to the New York Post, there was a “jarring” number of people killed in traffic accidents during the first quarter of the year. Over the first three months, a shocking 59 people were killed in accidents in New York City representing a 44% increase compared to the same time the previous year. Nearly half of the people killed were pedestrians.
The city continues to strive toward lower pedestrian death totals by implementing a number of safety improvements including calls for reduced speed limits and the expansion of the city’s camera enforcement programs, as reported by the New York Post.
New York City’s Vision Zero
Data from Vision Zero View shows that by November 30, 2022, over 100 pedestrians were killed in the Big Apple and nearly 7,500 were injured. Vision Zero is an initiative started in 2014 aimed at reducing the number of traffic fatalities in NYC. As indicated by the program, being struck by a vehicle is one of the leading causes of death for seniors and children under the age of 14 in the city.
Pedestrian Safety in New York
The New York State Department of Health reports that pedestrian accidents are one of the leading causes of “injury-related hospital admissions” and deaths for individuals in the state. Each year around 300 pedestrians die in traffic-related incidents and approximately 15,000 are injured.
Preventing Pedestrian Injuries and Deaths in NYC
Pedestrian accidents are usually preventable, caused by negligence, inattention, or wrongdoing. Pedestrians injured in motor vehicle accidents are strongly encouraged to contact an attorney. Depending on the circumstances, an individual who sustains serious injury may be entitled to compensation for their accident-related losses.
It is important to discuss your case with an attorney as early in the process as possible as you may only have a limited amount of time to file a claim for damages. Damages in a pedestrian accident case may include compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, disfigurement, pain and suffering, and more.
