In 2018, for instance, the NSC estimated that there would be 422 traffic fatalities during the Christmas Day holiday period (extending from 6 pm on December 23 to 11:59 December 26) with a confidence interval of 372-478. The actual number of deaths was 425 people.
In 2019, the projections were for 115 deaths on the roadways during the Christmas holiday period with a confidence interval of 94-138. The actual number of holiday-related traffic deaths was 129. Unfortunately, car travel has the highest rate of fatalities compared to any other form of transportation.
Deadliest States for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Drivers
Auto insurance analysis website ValuePenguin looked at the deadliest states for drivers during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
According to their findings the deadliest states during the winter holidays are:
- Mississippi
- South Dakota
- Louisiana
- New Mexico
- Alabama
New York ranked as the safest state in the country with a holiday motor vehicle rate of .52 per 100,000 residents. The insurance comparison site found that alcohol, weather, and speed were contributing factors in many holiday-related accidents.
