NY Attorney General Calls Harlem Truck Depot a "Public Nuisance"

Critics Say Controversial “Park Your Fleet” Truck Stop May Be Illegal

A new truck depot located in Harlem may violate state law, according to New York’s Attorney General. The “Park Your Fleet” truck stop has come under scrutiny after initial plans for affordable housing and a Museum of Civil Rights were scrapped. The state’s AG is now saying the truck depot may be a “public nuisance” and therefore prohibited.

At Ajlouny Injury Law, we know the struggles that residents of Harlem face. Commercial trucking accidents are far too common, leaving catastrophic injuries in their wake. Harlem Truck Stop May Get Shut Down by Attorney General

As reported by Streetsblog, a truck depot located at W. 145th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem may get shut down by New York’s Attorney General Letitia James. The AG is alleging that the truck stop may be considered a “public nuisance” and illegal under state law.

James cites the increased pollution associated with commercial trucks as well as the danger presented to pedestrians and cyclists in the area. Two 32-story buildings and a Museum of Civil Rights were originally planned for the location. If built, the twin towers would have provided over 900 units of housing. Some local politicians, however, felt the proposed development did not go far enough in alleviating the affordability crisis plaguing cities nationwide.

According to Gothamist, the developer ditched the housing plan after it met with opposition, instead moving forward with the “Park Your Fleet” truck depot. Now, the truck stop is being objected to by multiple parties including the state’s AG. It is worth noting that the AG is no stranger to suing high-polluting truck and bus companies due to health and safety concerns.

Increased Risk of Accidents on Harlem Streets

Opponents of the truck stop argue that not only do the vehicles present the risk of more pollution in an area that already has a high rate of “pollution-induced asthma” but it also increases the potential for deadly traffic accidents.

Commercial trucks are behemoths on the road. Even minor collisions can have major consequences. In the vast majority of truck accident cases, it is someone other than the truck driver that is injured or killed. Individuals who have been hurt in truck crashes are encouraged to contact a New York City car accident lawyer to determine their legal options.
